Workshop : Merchant Navy – A Career Opportunity

   

On 29th April 2016, St. Cecilia’s Public School, Vikaspuri hosted a workshop on Merchant Navy as a  career opportunity for students of class XII Science stream and class X. The spokesperson for the day was a seasoned mariner Mr. S.P.S Oberoi, Chief engineer(B.tech, Mechanical) at Anglo Eastern shop management Pvt. Ltd. The proud mariner has dedicated 40 years of his life as a sailor on foreign shores.

He made the students aware about merchant navy as a great career option after class 12th. It is a perfect career for those who love travelling, adventure, interested in seeing new places and meeting people. The students were made aware that merchant navy is commercial fleet of non combatant ships dealing with transportation of passengers, cargo, tanker ships, truck carriers, refrigerator ships, container ships etc. He informed the students about the eligibility criteria, age limit, medical standards, eye-sight and medical examination.

The students were told about Pre sea training, Deck cadet training, STCW course, Nautical Sciences and Marine Engineering. The students were encouraged to be focused and disciplined. The pride of uniform, highly paid salaries and adventures of exotic places were highlighted along with the grit and determination required.

In the open ended question session, the students put forward their queries which were answered by the spokesperson in detail. Madam Vice Principal also motivated the students to work and consider Merchant Navy as a career opportunity. Madam Principal thanked the recknowned sailor and encouraged the objective of the workshop.
